Style
The style of Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games is a lot simpler than that of the books we have read previously. She writes her text very straight forward and easy to read. The way she writes intrigues you and pulls you in. It makes you wonder what happens next and you want to keep reading. Her writing style is very relatable. She introduces the main characters very early on in the book. She gives us a clear description of their motives and role in the book. This gives us an exact image of the character without having to wonder about them. I have also noticed that in her writing, Collins includes a lot of flashbacks. On page 43, she has a memory of her father and birds. As she is pulled away from her family and put into training, she has more flashbacks. These memories comfort her and give her motivation to win the games.

Like your book, the writing of Fahrenheit 451 is extremely easier to read and enjoy compared to The Road. Straight forward text like these definitely makes the readings each night, and the entire book, much more enjoyable. The reader is also able to actually like the characters and enjoy the relationships present in the text. I am definitely more entertained by books like Fahrenheit 451 and The Hunger Games because they don't have complex writing and characters.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's entertaining! But does that entertainment value come with the sacrifice of literary merit? Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading The Hunger Games, and I also found the story compelling, but I wonder whether it became too "surface-oriented."
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eva. I read all three books and I loved Collin's writing style. It was so engaging. As corny as this sounds, I actually didn't want to put down the book. She has a way of connecting with the reader. She uses simple diction and sentences which makes the reading really easy to follow. When she begins to write about the games, it is really thrilling to read. The writing in some ways reflects Katniss. For example, when Katniss is running away from the other people, the text is also moving quickly and as a reader, you begin to feel what Katniss is feeling. I am currently reading Brave New World and the style is pretty different from the Hunger Games. For example, not everything is clearly defined, there are somethings that are somewhat confusing to the reader at first, but then later realized what was being referenced. As readers, we have to make a few assumptions of what it is that is being described rather than just being told what it is.
ReplyDeleteThere is certainly something to be said for Sci-fi that is easily readable. Most of the science fiction "greats" tend to write novels that I find dense and extremely difficult to follow. I read the Hunger Games a while back, and I think I enjoyed and followed it so well partly because of that. I was surprised and more than a little relived that the book I'm reading (Fahrenheit 451) is also very digestible.
